If your shower sprays sideways or the pressure feels weak, mineral buildup (limescale) inside the nozzles is a common cause, especially in hard-water areas. A simple vinegar soak dissolves it.

Safety notes

  • Check your shower head’s care instructions first. Some finishes, such as certain brass, gold-tone or nickel finishes, can be damaged by long vinegar soaks.
  • Never mix vinegar with bleach.

Method 1: Soak without removing the shower head

  1. Fill a sturdy plastic bag with white vinegar.
  2. Pull it up over the shower head so the nozzles are fully submerged.
  3. Secure it with a rubber band, zip tie or twist tie.
  4. Leave it for about 1 hour (or as your manufacturer recommends; avoid very long soaks on delicate finishes).
  5. Remove the bag and run hot water for a minute to flush out loosened deposits.
  6. Scrub the face of the shower head with an old toothbrush.

Method 2: Remove and soak

  1. Unscrew the shower head by hand or with an adjustable wrench, wrapping a cloth around the connection to avoid scratching.
  2. Soak it in a bowl of white vinegar for about an hour.
  3. Scrub the nozzles with a toothbrush; rub rubber nozzles with your fingertip to push out deposits.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Wrap fresh plumber’s tape around the shower arm threads if the old tape is worn, then screw the head back on hand-tight.

Clean the filter screen

Many shower heads have a small mesh screen where they connect to the pipe. Rinse it and gently brush away any grit. A blocked screen reduces water pressure.

Keep it clear

  • Wipe or rub the nozzles once a week.
  • Repeat a vinegar soak every 1–3 months in hard-water areas.
  • If buildup is constant, a filtered shower head or water softener may help reduce mineral deposits; how much depends on the product and your water.

FAQ

Can I use a commercial descaler?

Yes. A bathroom limescale remover works too. Follow the label carefully, ventilate the room and make sure it is safe for your shower head’s finish.

How long should I soak a shower head in vinegar?

Around one hour is usually enough for moderate buildup. For heavy deposits on chrome, some people soak longer, but check the manufacturer’s advice before leaving it overnight.
